If you are looking for something to do in Cairns at night instead of heading to the pub, The Night Markets could be just the place for you. There is plenty to see and even more to eat. You can stuff yourself silly and walk out with a souvenir.
Location – 54-60 Abbott St Cairns and running through to the Esplanade, it is basically located smack bang in the middle of town.
Open hours – 5:00pm to 11:30pm. Open 365 days per year.
What is in the night markets?
With over 120 stalls, you will find a rather large range of food, jewelry, tourist things, genuine hats and bags, knock off hats and bags, cheap massage booths, henna tattoo booths and many other random things. The best part about the night markets is the cheap massage at Rosie’s.
It may look a little dodgy, but I can assure you that a 30 min massage here will leave you feeling all squishy and relaxed.
If you are looking for a little gift for a loved one back home then this is certainly the place to go. There are countless stalls selling cheap little ‘Cairns’ branded items like bracelets, magnets, bottle openers and other knick-knacky things.
There are plenty of clothing stalls too selling all kinds of apparel. The most common thing you will find here is ‘Cairns’ tee shirts. They are everywhere you look so if you are in the market for one, then make sure you do a full walk around to find your favourite.
Also make sure you try it on, these markets are no different to most markets around the world and as you know there can be a lot of low quality things on offer.
This is the real star of the show in my opinion as there is lots of high quality, locally owned and produced products. You will find things like hot sauce, Australian coffee and tea, silver jewelry, carved wood, soap and candles. Pretty much all of the things you would expect to find in the markets.
Like most tourist hot spots in Australia, you will find a wide variety of locally made Aboriginal artwork. This an be purchased on canvas, on boomerangs or even on a didgeridoo.
It is really important to do your research when buying timber products abroad particularity making sure your customs will allow you to bring it back into your country.
There is nothing worse than forking out a few hundred on a beautiful memento only to have it seized by border patrol.
Opals seem to be a pretty big thing in the markets. They are all mined in Australia and processed here too. So if you are looking for something on the more expensive side then you can pick up a genuine Australian opal in the Cairns Night Markets too.
Fishy Foot Spa
Yep… we have them here too. If you have been to Thailand or Indonesia then you have certainly run into one of these before. It’s a weird craze of feeding fish the dead skin on your feet. It is a simple set of of benches and fish tanks with thousands of little fish that will happily eat all the loose flesh from your feet.
It’s pretty gross, the feeling is weird and honestly…. ethically, I’m not sure how I feel about it. But if it’s your thing, go for it.
As you would expect there is a wide variety of food on offer here. Everything from pho, Chines, carvery’s, ice cream, crepes, Thai, noodles, Greek, sushi, seafood and even a late night coffee if you want to bounce off the walls instead of sleeping.
Cairns Night Markets Summary
If you have never been or are a tourist passing through then I would recommend heading in and having a good look through the markets. Locals will normally take visiting friends and family here so they can pick up something “Cairns” branded on their holiday. It is certainly no locals hangout though as Cairns locals generally avoid crowds and the crowds here can be a little intense.
